Kutiman Holds Up Refined Mirror to YouTube Generation
Kutiman, an Israeli musician, has created a fascinating reflexive project - Thru You - in which using mainly instructional and performance videos, all on YouTube, he has created seven really rather sophisticated music-video mashups. These tracks don't just hang together they work musically and visually presenting an almost polished product from what is essentially found material. Ingeniously sidestepping potential copyright arguments by refraining from using professional video material from established artists, this project uses mainly amateur or instructional work, eschewing the music business itself and preferring school concerts and home movies! This is extremely creative stuff, very much in the spirit of the Zeitgeist. Congratulations Kutiman.

Hi David
Sure looks good but I dont really get how he gets round the copyright issues. Unless something is published with some form of "creative commons" agreement it still has copyright of the original creator surely. I think he’s rather more in the realm of using material he can "get away with" or individuals that have no interest in perusing copyright. All material is copyright and your last post was on just this topic. The US congress just backed down from a bill that essentially said that any work unattributed could be "claimed" so I could claim any work you forgot to put your name to. Luckily that bill never went through.
